in that case its very cool  i love japanese art as well. i went to japan this summer and was the most amazing experience of my life. i will never forget my experiences there. it's something about the place that makes you different. i understand you fascination for the culture/lifestyle there.

i've thought about a koi tattoo as well. when drawn with the koi swimming upstream it symbolizes over coming a hardship in life. over the last few year's i've had a life changing situation that came up, it'll make my life different from that point on and was something that i will always be fighting against.

a koi tattoo has just become so common, almost to the point of a girl getting a butterfly or a tramp stamp

Like I said I am still giving a thought on design, and I ill be in swim season when I turn 18 so I will hav to hold out till after. I want something Japanese style, but it has to have meaning or I don't get it.

the only thing that sucks about a first tattoo. It you either need it to be a really wel thought out idea. Or you need to make it so you can add to it easier. when I got my first (at17) I had it done so I could add to it. And add I did. but my only problem now is that I have seen a few things and got a few ideas that I wish I coud have done instead. Not that I don't like wha tI have now but I don't have the room to do what I would really love to have.

So make sure you think this throug very well. You will either love it forever or wish it wasn't there by the time your 25.

great advice from koop171,it took me three years to complete my backpiece,my arms stiil are not done,i have lived in japan(am also a buddhist)if you are serious about becoming a buddhist monk some day i would rethink the tattoo, they keep ther bodies pure in the monestary,no tats or body mods of any kind,in japan tattoos are symbols of the the old ways to identify what criminal organization you belonged to,it wasnt until a few years back that it became legal to actually show your tattoos in public, but it is a very artistic way of expression.

get a tattoo that your going to look back on and know why you got it :D dont get something like a stupid cartoon character, ect...

if you have to ask someone what you should tat, then you should NOT get a tat. if you are not 100 percent behind getting a tat and know what you want to get, don't even bother. you will regret it.

ditch the koi tat and get a back piece with a shoal of unicorns being ridden by care bears as they jump over a rainbow. it would be so cool. ed hardy might even end up making a shirt matching the design just to pay homage to the sheer amount of badass-ery that it would secrete. just my dream at least.

Koi tattoos are pretty rare I don't see why you guys are telling him not to get it. I think a koi, with some nautical stars and swallows would mean a lot.

Agree. If you get something that makes absolutely no sense, or obviously has no meaning at all I will be the guy making fun of you everywhere. But I make fun of alot of people.

Stick a borat portrait in that tattoo somewhere and you got a winner..

Koi tattoo's aren't rare at all.. Doesn't mean he can't get it but I see them everywhere. And I would never mix a traditional style with a japanese style tattoo. lol

Also make sure you can get into the monestery with a tattoo. Don't want a tattoo to screw up something that IMO is probably more important than itself.

Also since you're converting to buddism might consider a simpler buddist tattoo. Just an idea.
