First Time Cichlid Owner

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Might be a good idea just check how big she is
She's about three inches. I waa thinking I may get some cool color combinations with a pink female in the mix. I'm going to go with tetras too. I just want some activity for a change. My husbands biggest complaint was having such a big tank for one fish.

Adding anything to a breeding pair of convicts that have had that tank to themselves is a bad idea. Another female may be accepted, or killed. I'd leave it with the pair.

I had all sorts of gouramis and cichlids . green or pineapple swords will be your best bet.
They get larger than the wags and reds witch most have platty in them. Don't put another female convict in the tank.
Give your 2 a chance to grow. Male will get about 4in. And female about 2+, and will be boss of that size of tank. Plus's you will have all sorts of fry. As stated above small cat will do also
A!long with the swordtails..good luck. Fishbum. Has sound advice also

It's possible that more female cons could work, but I would put 2 more, not just one. This way the third female isn't the only fish in the tank taking the wrath of a breeding pair of cons. I agree livebearers would be good.
I also agree with Duanes, I think the gourami would be too cichlid-like in appearance, and as a slow peaceful species, would probably be murdered.
What size tank is this? Looks like a 55 or 75? If so, pair of cons probably won't want anything in there that they view as a threat. In a 125 or larger you might have success with a single larger cichlid that the cons can't kill, like a carpintis, JD, etc.

Totally agree, depending on tank size. More female convicts are probably one of the best things you can add to a pair.
I've had good results keeping harems of many species in the past.
I always like to see convict colonies and fry of various growth stages in a nice setting.
Great cichlids for a single species set up.

By the way your tank looks great .;) .lots of good Info.
The only way to learn about cichlids is to keep them.
There is no exact way . what works for one might not work fore another .
Be careful cichlids are addictive.
