First time ich treatment HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I took it out anyway, and the plecs are just the standard $3 ones from the LFS, about 6-7" long not juvies.

What's the main cause of Ich and how can it be prevented in the future? I suspect it came from the rocks I plucked out of a local river. I did soak them overnight in a 1 part bleach 3 part water solution then rinsed several times with boiling water, then hit em with a scrub brush and the hose and let em dry completely. You'd think that would kill any orginism on the rocks.

keep your fish happy, ich turns up when the fish/fishes get stressed, by water changes, a new fish being introduced, and thing that stresses them. you cleaned the river rocks good.

and the common pleco you have , it's a bullet proof pleco. so add full dosage.

Thanks!

So now I'm seriously considering setting up a small quarrantine/hospital tank. What's a good size tank for this application. I'll be putting all my new fish in it for a week before introducing them to my main tank, and be using it for any fish that get sick. I was thinking somewhere between 30-40 gallon. I have 2 10 gallons just sitting collecting dust, you think they'd suffice? I normally buy juvi fish (unless I get a good deal on something bigger) so it's not like I'd be housing any fish over 4" on a regular basis (unless one of my adults in the 125 get sick)

my QT tank is a 30gal. just the right size for my smaller fish and a 90 for my bigger fish....good luck.

I'm worried now that I might lose my Jewel, I checked on the tank before I left for work this morning and found it cowering deep in a cave, wouldn't even come out for a feeding. Fish looks very stressed :(

So, I got home from work this evening and was inspecting my fish and could no longer see and ich spots on the Green Terror (the only one they were visable on) and my fish are no longer scratching, my Jewel is looking better, has it's color back and is swimming around the tank again :D. Things are looking better already. I didn't expect the treatment to start working so quickly. Just did another 25% water change and another dose of Rid-Ich+.
