OK, I read the title on this thread and thought " we're swapping recipe's ?". I just had beef heart for dinner a few nights ago. It never occurred to me to feed it to the fish. BTW the beef heart was excellent with roasted potatoes and carrots.
A while back I decided to make some of my own fish food and did a LOT of reading online. I found the best source to be (hope it is o.k. to list another site) www.loaches.com/articles. There is an article that gives very detailed information on what/how to make your own food. I followed those instructions exactly and my fish (one community tank and one brackish tank) love it, eat it quickly and have thrived for eight months now with the homemade food as the largest portion of their diet.
One thing I noticed is that you can pretty much supplement whatever you want to meet the needs of your fish (i.e. more spinach/vege's for chilids, more fish/protien for carnivores).
As for the question about gelatin breaking down in warm water, I have never had a problem as the fish eat it before it gets a chance to breakdown. The gelatin just holds the mix together for the short time between frozen cube and fish's stomach.
By the way, making my own fish food is probably the best diy project yet. Total cost for me (already had a blender) was under $50 and after 8 months of feeding 110 gallons I still have 75% left, way, way cheaper than buying at the lfs. Granted I do feed a very large variety, so lots of other food sources as well, but bottom line is very cheap way to feed the fish.
HI All,
just an update, I finished the recipe and is currently in the fridge cooling and will place in the freezer later this afternoon. I will try and feed some tonight. Thanks everyone for their input..was very helpful. If you have any other ideas or have your own fish food recipe, post and share with us your recipes!
