Hey Im a long time fish keeper and have put in some time on line for my tanks but never considered my pond untill i found this site and thread!

I have always had koi or golds in my pond but never looked at it as fish keeping like i do in the house.

now that I have other pond keepers here to ask I want to know what else i can do plant wise and fish wise in this pond???

I have a landscaped pond that is about 300 gallons. its a modest pond but i built it with a big filter system for what it is. I have an aquascape skimmer/falls set up with a 3000 gph pump. there is a small falls and a 11 foot stream that fish are not able to reach. the water moves quite fast in the pond so with that in mind what would some of you do if this was yours in this condition?? im open for any ideas large or small.

Just for fun ill add that this is in a city suburb less that 10 min from the state capital! the pictures were taken in spring so the garden is pretty bare. we grow our own vegetables each year in the gardens to the right. fed with pond water a few times a year when i clean and do water changes.. works great!

its about 2 feet in the middle. winter the water ill assume is around 32 degrees summer im not sure i have never checked it.. I know the depth is lame. i had my brother inlaw do the initial install because he has his own lill landscape buisness. it was his second pond and he didnt make it as big as i wanted. i would have made it bigger and deeper a few years ago but its all boulder lined and I have no body interested enough to help me out.. its surly not a 1 man job! ( I have never been truly happy with its size) but didnt want to offend the new bro in law either.. should i go bigger?

i Just got a pond liner ..so i am still in the beggining stages of setting up my own pond...but for mine and i think your would look great with a high waterfall look..especially if you have a big pump..just my take on it..and my pond is only 18" deep..sucks...

I agree 100% the falls were actually smaller when he was building it.. I told him i wanted more elivation and he added a few inches. (turned out hes a lazy spoiled kid and because i was geting a deal i assume i got what he was willing to do in a day) So i was thinking if I do tear it all out:cry: ill dig the pond 2 feet further around the paver patio left and right. and dig it at least 12 to 18 inches deeper. ill take the dirt i remove and use it to build up the falls or maybe even build a structure for the falls like a water mill or just a wood or rock structure making it possible to make the stream a second smaller pool rather than a stream so i can keep smaller fish in it.

im glad to hear you say that and this is why I posted it. you thought the same thing i did when my friends and family say its fine.. its not. not for people like us.. its like a disease! lol

I wouldnt put koi in there. 300 gallons is just not enough. But goldies would be OK. If you have the option to make it bigger, definitely do that! Koi are also not plant friendly, but goldies are a little better with plants. Part of it depends on what you want to do with it and how you want it to look. I am in-progress with a 1700 gallon pond build, which will host goldies and minnows (even this is too small really for more than 1 koi - and that would be a squeeze). I haven't determined plants yet, but am in the planning stage for that since spring is starting to arrive here in GA. I'll have some water lilies for sure, possibly some reed plants around the edges, and I'm also planning on some aquaponics to grow edible plants as well. :) There's just so many options out there.

Really nice shed, gives the overall look of the garden a more "home feel" to it.

Even though im new to this place im just getting the start off to my new pond... ive done all my research and layout...al i have to do now is build it which is the fun part
