So got this 5 red belly piranhas that are in a 40g breeder since they’re only 1.5-2”.. I just wanted to know if I can keep them in this tank till the end of the year and will I be able to keep them in a 75g next(current apartment is alittle tight for a bigger tank) or do I absolutely have put them in a 125. im just trying to figure out as early as I can to prepare.

maybe 3 in a 75 -

125g for 5 -

you want to keep in a 40g - pick 1 and ur good for a while or 3 and roll the dice...

the less space / accommodations you provide will make the situation tense - they will most likely kill each other...

gl!

Well initial plan was 3 on a 75/90.. but I felt bad when I saw 8 1”-1.5“ rbps in a 10g tank at the fish store with ripped fins, and 2 with almost no dorsal fin and tail. So I took home 5.

When I started keeping pygos, I housed them in a 75 gallon initially. I had a 125 gallon tank within a year. Shortly after, there was a 180 gallon tank. I suggest finding something with a width of 24” if you can. The footprint is slightly different from a 125 but makes a real difference. There are no absolutes, but the larger the footprint the greater your chance of success at keeping a healthy shoal.

If you felt bad for the piranhas because it nipper fins then I wouldn’t bother keeping them. When you have a shoal it is rare for them to be in perfect condition. Piranhas always go after each other and fin nipping is a big part of that.
