Because they are beautiful prehistoric like animals, and I would hope that we can keep them around a lot longer. I would never want to inflict pain on such a great specimen.

I have 4 baby sturgeons right now.

They are my all time favorite.

Terrific photograph and congradulations on two marvelous looking catches. When and where is the fish fry going to be and are you serving chips with it as well? Maybe a flagon or two of Guiness?

they're 4 and 5 foot fish i think they can probably handle it... lol but hey to each their own

Nice Catches.. around here they just spear hunt them.. which is sad to me.. I'de like to have the option like everything else I fish for to "release" if possible, particulalry a species so threatened in my area. I have hooked into one accidentally out of season going for walleye.. and Holy cow... darn thing was like Jaws.. ran straight up the cannel against the current and my 12lb test and med rig just snapped on me. Was pretty insane.

awesome catch man, get em at work all the time but we have to release them. as for rod and reel fishing its not the actual pain that kills a fish while being caught. there are two reasons. the stress put on the fish while being caught kills fish all of the time and it seems to have a stronger affect on the bigger fish... such as giant bluefin tuna that can weigh over 1000 lbs. i have seen these bohemoths die at the surface countless times due to stress. and if you think they are tough to get to the boat when they are alive.. haha.. 1000 lbs of dead fish weight is rediculous. another reason is the temp. that the fish's blood reaches during a prolonged struggle. long lining down off puerto rico in that warm water, when ever we had a big tuna that pulled for hours on end it would literally cook itself with its own blood temp. crazy stuff

Thanks everyone we just had some it was amazing didnt even taste like fish. And i wish i had a video to see a 5ft long fish jump all the way out of the water was crazy. And sorry i know they are prehistoric but it is no different then eating a cow or chicken. The thing is we did actually eat them. So it didnt go to waste.
