First Tropical Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What are your plans for filtration? You'll want a bottom drain on something that size.

I'm no expert but you might want to go to koiphen.com forum and see what advise they give you. There are some really knowledgable pond builders over there.

A little behind scheduale, but the backhoe is being rented tomorrow to dig the rest of the pond out. I've decided that the size will be 15' at its longest point, 12' at its widest point, and 5-6' at its deepest point.

I'll upload pics tomorrow.

Also, I considered doing three bottom drains and cutting holes in the liner, but have decided not to. I'm worried about leaks, future plumbing issues, or the liner tearing. I think that the best way to do it would be the bottom drain connected to the filter, but I think I need to find a different way. So if anyone has any ideas feel free to throw them out there

charles.. assuming its a 15'X12'X6'.. the pond would be like 8000 gallons.. so you are expecting a minimum of 1.5X turn over per hour.. i have a 3X turn over(almost) in my pond..

It was going to be that size, but after talking with my dad for awhile we decided to make it 15x10x6. Then as we started digging we hit solid clay at 4.5' and we couldn't get through it, so I said that it is deep enough and we can leave it there.

So it is an odd shape now and is 15x10x4.5, I'll be upoading photos in a few minutes

And finally

Now as you can see, there's still a ton of junk in there and the hole is pretty messy. That's because the backhoe we renting was a piece of (badword) and eventually broke down on us with several issues that I'm not going into detail about. Luckly though, the owner of the rental was very understanding and said that he would fix the machine and give us full credit to come rent it out again next week. So basically all the work we did today was free and we have another day's worth that is already paid for, so it all works out in the long run.
At that time I will clean out the rest of the dirt and the rest can be done by hand
