Large tanks can have tons of aggression. What enhances aggression is a complex relationship between species type, species sex, space, species age, availablity and desirability of food, water temperature, water chemistry, physical complexity of the tank, ability for fish to perceive each other, ability of fish to escape from each other, etc.
Now, taking fish from an overcrowded smaller tank and moving them all into a larger tank with all other factors being equal, may reduce aggression if space was an important driver and if the new tank has a dramatically large amount of space. E.g., going from a 200 gallon to a 1,500 gallon would probably reduce a lot of it. Going from 200 to 300, when space was not a big factor might have no effect.
