Jd Man is refering to auctions done by local fish clubs that you got to and bid on items displayed by the auctioneer. He's not refering to the "on line" type fish auction.

There are a few with in reasonable driving distance to you JD. Get on circle city's web site for meeting and auction dated. Also check out GCAS web site for thier meetings and auction dates (greater Cincinatti Aquarium Society) They have one in the spring and one in the fall, the spring auction is huge. There is also a real big one in northern ohio done by Ohio cichlid association, not sure of thier web site though (google it) I believe there is one in Columbus Ohio too. If your into reef tanks, there are a couple frag swaps that are worth going to as well that I can post the info if your (or anyone elce) is interested or just go to Daytonreef.com or Cincyreef.com for information.

 That's what I was looking for..I will have to go to the one in Cinci. this spring.

So, do you just grab a number and start bidding?

I'm sure it varies from one to another. Typically, you can look at the bags of fish, each will have a seller name and bag number on it. The auctioneer will call out the fish type and bag number when it's up and you try to out bid everyone elce. Cincy has a deal where you can pay $2.00 to get a specific bag auctioned right away instead of waiting untill he gets to the one your interested in. Pretty cool!!! YOu can find some really neat stuff for fair prices.

Spoken like a true site promoter....... I sooooo funny.

But of course :) , Seriously, I wouldnt trust my money on aquabid if i didnt know the seller.. which would always be the case. To me there has to be a level of trust before i give my heard earned money to someone on line.

:iagree:

That's why I was trying to find out about any local auctions so I wouldn't have to worry about that or having to worry about shipping.

Cool..may have to check that out. I am looking for some plecos...are you going to have any there?[/QUOTE

I have no plecos for sale. I keep all of those to myself!!! :naughty:
Hope to meet you there though!

As for Aquabid, I know that some people have bad experiences there but I've obtained cool fish & stuff from that site with no problems (yet).
It is always important to check a sellers feedback before bidding. On every auction, there are two numbers next to the sellers user name.

Example: 300/315
The first number indicates how many people have left Positive feedback and were happy with their purchase. The second number indicates how many people have left feedback all together. That means that in this example, 15 people were not happy with their purchase and left negetive feedback.

I would not buy from a seller that has 0/0 feedback because that means they haven't sold anything. I would also not buy from a seller that has a rating of say 20/30. That would mean one of three transactions went bad according to the buyers involved.

Another factor for me as a buyer is this: Will I get the same fish I see in the photo? If not, I'm likely to decline.

My overall opinion on internet fish buying is that it's safer to buy from a community seller here on MFK or atleast from someone that makes fish their only business.
