Fish by plane?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a thread from not too long ago about a member who was also looking to bring fish on a plane.I don't remember if he was successful or not but you can search the threads in this section and see if he posted his outcome.

He did successfully get through, he brought a paper explains that he could and some other stuff, I forgot. You'd have to find the thread.

I am currently talking to him. He said he called the Airline and TSA to approve. I emailed TSA now just the airline, lets see what they say!

TSA's policy is that fish ARE permitted as carry-ons:

(From TSA's website):

Live fish must be transported in a clear, plastic, spill proof container. In this case, the container may be larger than 3.4 ounces. A Transportation Security Officer will visually inspect your live fish at the checkpoint.

Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.

You can bet that most TSA screeners don't know this...so the best thing you can do is to go to www.tsa.gov and type "fish" into the "When I Fly Cnn I bring My...?" box. Up will pop a box with the text above. Print it out and bring it. Also, if you have a smartphone, have it up as you go through security.

I've heard that folks have had mixed success carrying fish on. One guy got turned away because bags he was trying to carry on were leaking. I'd make sure that everything's triple-bagged, meets the size limits, are available for inspection and that you're not doing things at the last minute (and have a back-up plan).

Alternately, I've shipped fish as checked bags (in my luggage) many times. Again, just put them in styros, triple bag and don't exceed the weight/size limits...

I got an email response from TSA saying the exact same thing! Im just gonna ask in person to double check! Im going to need a backup plan aswell..

Print that out and bring it with you.

I think the guy that got turned away blew it with leaking bags and (I suspect) being disorganized and a teen-ager. I keep meaning to test it out but haven't been flying much lately!

I will be sure to do that! I have never been on a plane! So itll be the first for me. Will being a teenager play a part in this?
