The mood of most fish along with the stress levels in the tank have a great deal to do how colorful they are. In the case of flowerhorns...your talking about a fish that dosn't 'color up' until full grown and are only at thier best when in spawning condition.
Anytime the question of color and AF. cichlids comes up I always ask what the PH of the water is. Africans can live at CA/SA ph levels...7.4-7.6 but they will never thrive. you need a much higher PH to bring out the color of AF's
