I had the same thing happen with my weeeeeeksie bichir.
He was out for at least 12 hours, dry as a rock and as soon as I held him over the air stone he kicked back, after about 3 minutes of doing this he started moving around and swimming. Two days later he died!!:(
At least we tried our hardest!!!
Mine escaped through between the filter and the hood, now it's ALL ducked taped shut!

Well I would like to thank you for this post, I got my first aro who managed to find his way out of a 2" gap above the filter. He had to have been out of the tank for 5 min and was not breathing and didn't move got him into the tank and after about 15 seconds of moving him back and forth he swam away. I was lucky to have a spare sheet of egg crate and made a cover and he hasn't jumped out since. He was also very kind and as a thank you ate 2 clown loachs that night...

similar thing happened to me, senegal bichir jumped out of the tank and into the overflow, which wasn't in use. fell down through the hole and wandered around on the floor overnight. when i found him in the morning he was hard, dry, covered in dust and dirt, and not moving. got a paper towel (burial shroud to wrap him up in) and he twitched. i couldn't believe it. put him back in the tank, moved him back and forth in the flow of the filter, and after only a few minutes, he "woke up". once all the dirt was gone, the only damage was frayed fins and a slight scrape on his side, which has healed completely without scarring.
