Fish death...just one of those things?

What if the store doesn't accept

Your local LFS may very well take back unwanted fish of the mini monster variety. They can sell them on very easily. In my experience not many will accept larger fish. That makes complete sense when you think that keeping fish is a minority hobby, keeping large fish rarer still. So if a store keeper accepts a 13" bala shark for example that's outgrew its owners tank, the chances are he'll be stuck with it.

This is one of the reasons that research is key in this hobby. You need to be aware of full potential size, and lifespan of the fish you're buying....BEFORE you buy!

But honestly, any hobbyist who wants their fish to die just to free up room for others is a poor hobbyist in my view. If they buy fish that are going to grow large and live for 20 years or so they need to have done their homework beforehand and commit themselves to the long haul.

My pet store is worried that it will make their tank sick, even though they keep theirs on gravel and I keep mine on sand :duh:. Also they have 20 cories in a 10 gallon tank and I have 6 in a 40 gallon tank...
Your tank will still contain different pathogens to what the store has. Reasonable IMO
