Im sort of new to fish keeping so i dont even know how

You'll need a test kit to figure the water parameters out.

I really am sorry for your Loss i have a CK to he's 15'' and there the best fish ever.
Just go to a petshop that you can trust and ask for a water tester. It gives you all the info you need on testing water its real easy.
Its not your fault but the petshop you bought the tank off should of asked you did you have a Water tester :(

You can go get an ammonia test kit at Petsmart for like $5.

API liquid test kit is best recommended. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH on both tap and tank water.

Additional questions:
Filtration?
Temperature?
History of your tank (health issues)?
Water change schedule?
Tank size?

Im from Ireland and there is no Petsmart over here but from what i Hear they dont know how to take care of fishi go to the same petshop everytime i encounter a problem with my fishtank/fish and they know me since i was 9 so they have known me for 5 years and they would never try trick me. So if theres like a Less famous Fish Shop In Oregon i would go there. Thats Just My Opinion :) Good Luck ;)
