hey guys idk whats up with my serpae tetras. a while ago i lost a pleco to existing nitrites. they are now down to 0. but now my serpae tetras are acting weird. one of them is swimming like hes gonna die any minute. and the rest are all inactive. my temperature was 85 degrees(i get hot summers here). could that be causing it? i put a fan on top of the tank and the temp is down to 80(still dropping). when the nitrites were present, the serpaes didnt show any problems with it. now that its gone, they are doing this. im assuming the heat is doing it to them.

btw the one thats acting like hes gonna die has bad fin nips on him.

I do not think it is the temp. Last week with the heatwave my tanks were 96, 92, 92 degrees. All my fish did well.

You need to treat your tank with Melafix(this is an all natural fish medication that cures damaged fins) You will see improvement within a week.
As for your water temperature.....it's way to high. In the past i've put some ice into a zip top bag and let it float on the surface of the water, however, NEVER add ice directly to your tank...it will throw all of your water levels off and it will rapidly decrease your water temperature which in result will shock your fish and may even kill them. You want your H20 temperature to be around the mid. 70's
You may also need to check the ph in your water because a high ph may be the reason as to why your fish are inactive. To lower your ph, you will need to purchase a neutral regulator which is available for purchase at your LFS....Melafix will also be sold there
Hopefully this helps!!!! GOOD LUCK ;)

i know its not the pH because ive been testing my water every day. and the tanks temp is already dropping so ice isnt needed. im just wondering if this is a later reaction to the nitrites that were in the tank, or if its from the temp. thanks!

Do you have a powerhead or bubbler to produce surface agitation? If you don't, thats probably why your fish died. Lack of oxygen. Or it maybe that your tank is still cycling..

"BAD NIPS ON HIM"....... sounds to me there is a bully at large....... hmmmm..... I have serpae tetras and they are not as "peaceful" as some sources would like us to believe! Now if the nipping is actually fin rot..... then do a large water change and make sure ALL of your parameters check. By the way, I also had a tank that went from 78 to 85 degrees due to it being on the counter/near the stove..... and yes the serpaes were very lethargic (maybe this is species specific?)....BUT once I moved them to a cooler spot..... it took about 3 to 4 days for them to "recover" back to normal. GL.

I would seriously recommend not doing any of these things. 85 is not hot enough to cause problems unless there is a lack of oxygen in the tank (higher temps in your aquarium can lower oxygen levels). I'd recommend a big water change and adding some aeration if you don't already have it. I'm really not a melafix fan, and definitely not a fan of adjusting your ph with chemicals.
All your fish really need is well-filtered water (and cycled too ;)), regular water changes, and a high quality diet to thrive.
So what are your ammonia and nitrate levels at?

guys my surface is rockin and rollin! oxygen is not an issue. and i know its not fin rot because all the other fish's fins are fine. the nitries levels are at 0 so a water change isnt needed. im guessing its a late reaction to the nitrites. also my serpaes are chasing eachother. they never did that in the other tank. maybe they are still just establishing terratory??

ammonia is at 0, nitrates are very low lol almost 0.
