My fish have been dying off one by one over the past week or so, lost 8 angelfish and two rosy tetras so far, they start to lose their ability to stay upright and then just start floating around then die shortly afterwards. Some of the fish had littles red dots on them and it looks like the base of their fins are red too.. Tank is 7x2.5x2, planted, only has 8 rosy tetras and 3 one inch black acaras in it now. I'm running an FX6 and two APS 2000lph cannisters. 50% water change once a week, did an extra one when the deaths started but didn't help any. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10 - 20. Any help would be great.

sounds allot like
Hemorrhagic Septicemia

SIlver_VHS.ashx

Physical/Behavioral Signs or Symptoms:

  • A variety of different symptoms may occur, though some fish exhibit no external symptoms.
  • Hemorrhaging of internal organs, skin and muscle.
  • Bulging eyes.
  • Bloated abdomens.
  • Bruised-looking reddish tints to eyes, skin, gills and fins.
  • Open sores.
  • Abnormal behavior.
Cause:
Infection that is brought into aquariums by fish already infected with a deadly virus called Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV or VHSv).

Treatment:
There is no known cure for this virus. Sometimes treating secondary infections with wide spectrum antibiotics or general use treatments like Lifeguard® will reduce mortality. Add one tablet Lifeguard to each 5 gallons and treat 5 consecutive days. Remove activated carbon and conduct a partial water change in between treatments.

Thanks for the reply, i'm down to one angel and 5 rosy tetras now. Looks like I could be better off euthanizing the fish to save any more suffering. Will this infection remain in the tank if all the affected fish are removed? Or will I be safe to restock after removing all fish and doing a large water change? Thanks for the reply.

for me? IF this is the issue, and no one can be sure if it is with out pathology done. I would empty and bleach the pee out of the tank. before then again if me I would be on water changes and treating the tank with polyguard , and see if it makes a dif. if not and they die, full tank sterilization.

That make sense?

How to sterilize ?

Bleach, vinegar; once emptied of course.

If bleach is used, needs to be cleared of ALL bleach before filling with water again, you don't even want the tiniest bit of bleach in there
