I am reading posts everywhere that their bichir, cory, or eel always escapes.
But exactly how do they escape?

I'm looking at my tank here and it's fully covered except for a few holes and slits on the back corner of the tank.
I mean unless I fill the tank up 100%, there seems to be no possible way.
Well I would get it if you're an eel and you're big enough to reach the bottom of the tank and just lift yourself up, but what about the juveniles or other fish?

Do they just jump out like arowanas or what??

idk how fish are so good at this, but take the rope fish for example. these guys can get out of a whole that looks smaller then their body diameter....they seem to jump with amazing accuracy when they are trying to escape...

I've never had one actually succeed in getting out but every one I have ever had wasn't happy unless it was constantly trying.:screwy:

My lil senegal, on the first night home jumped out. He was swimming into the current of the filter and seemed to aim directly for the first opening for the wires.
Luckily I was in my room and just quickly grabbed my net and popped him back in but both holes are definitely plugged up now :) Very good at jumping!!!

A hole = fish on floor. any hole. This can be avoided by covering any hole. Duct tape, clear packing tape, nylon mesh, glass tops, a hood. Just look at the diameter of your eel, ropefish or bicher. A ropefish say 10-12" is the diameter of a pencil. Don't give it the chance to end up on the floor. I give mine PVC pipes to hide in and that greatly reduces there escape attempts. good luck

but if i cover the holes up how would i get oxygen for the surface aggitation and air pumps inside? wouldn't it just re-use the oxygen over and over until it runs out?

That's why Issac Fishton came up with the notion of a sump!

If theres a spot for them to get out of they will, some fish are really amazing in the distance they can cover

yeah nevermind what they can fit through. I just found one of my clown loaches in my sump... he had to have gotten through an egg-crate overflow guard to get down there. I mean I guess he's small enough, but I don't think he could have got through without some effort.

but a sump is not in the tank...it's just connected.
how would the tank get fresh oxygen from the surrounding air?
