fish euthanasia?

thanks for the replies. in tropical fish the metabolism slows down too so that the fish are asleep and (hopefully) dont feel it. my own opinion (and these are all opinions so dont bash me!! lol) is that clove oil would be like us slowly dying of smoke inhalation or other poison gas - breathing something other than air. i am guessing that the clove oil is to slowly cut off the oxygen supply to the fish? like being choked?

no. its an anesthetic.

It would be like you dying while under anesthesia. Painless.

Clove oil is used as an anesthetic in fish for tumor removal and other surgery procedures.
It will just knock them out painlessly.

Its the overdose after they are asleep that kills them.

No the fish falls asleep before it dies. You dont give a lethal overdose from the start. You add it slowly in small quantites so it gets in the fishes blood stream and it makes the fish sleepy. The fish is sedated, at that point adding more clove oil kills it.

good find ang! i think that cleared up my doubts and fears about how to do it and i will stick to freezing them. cheers chicka!

sure thing. :)

ah i see. not so horrific after all you brutes! hehe
i guess noone will ever know whether it hurts or not - i do know though that i would rather put a seriously ill fish down than have it suffer

there's nothing wrong with euthanasia...... in animals. IMHO.

If they are suffering and dont have any hopes of a full recovery. Why draw the pain out longer.

I concur with you. The point of euthanasia is to end the pain without the fish suffering even more.
