fish feel pain... Or not

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I pretty sure most fish if not all fish feel pain. When my fish get ick it scratches itself with the gravel. That is a feeling that they can feel so why not feel the pain when they get hurt? When you watch 2 beta fight, you can tell if one is hurt by the way he is swimming and avoiding. Plus a bite cause the beta to squirm and squiggle. Would you call that pain? or call that sensation? I think sensation (feeling) come with pain.

neither I, I'm not a expert either, I simply copyied this out of a book, read my second post, it might make some sence.

Oh I already know fish feel pain. I had two tanks set up with a pipe between them. I would electrically shock one side of the tank when the fish goes to that side. Pretty soon all the fish stay on the other side.

Just kidding, I have never done that experiment. All I did was cut off their tails with a pair of scissors and see if they felt anything. And they did, and it's not the reaction that the next time they see the scissors they swim away from it.

"The first conclusive evidence of pain perception in fish is said to have been found by UK scientists.

This complements earlier findings that both birds and mammals can feel pain, and challenges assertions that fish are impervious to it.
The scientists found sites in the heads of rainbow trout that responded to damaging stimuli.
They also found the fish showed marked reactions when exposed to harmful substances."

So basically, fish can feel pain, but in varying amounts in different parts of their body, and a lot also depends on the type of fish.

Pain or no pain, subjecting creatures through "painful" ordeal cause extreme stress for any organism.

pain is your body telling you that something is being damaged. All living creatures (masochists aside) attempt to escape this damage. Whether their body tells them that they are in pain like our bodies tell us, we shouldn't be harming them.

I'm gonna stick a needle in my oscars eye and then ask him if it hurts...I'll be right back.
I'll go one better and stick a needle in MY eye and see if my spine tells me to pull it out.
I'm a fish keeper and fisherman, so the first sentence was really a joke.
Is the reaction of a fish due to pain or simply a reaction to the situation?
If you hook me it's gonna hurt and I'll react. If you net me, it might not hurt, but I'm still gonna react.
