any dead thing(includes food) that breaks down will cycle a tank. the pros are it doesnt potentially kill fish you buy.

if your so worried about price that comes from the amount of food, just go to your lfs and get some fish that recently died in transit, or if the price of gas is still to expensive for you just take a piss in the tank your urine contains enough ammonia to start a cycle. urine is by far the cheapest way to cycle a tank.

if you take dangerous medicines you should probably avoid urine, but its probably doesnt make a big difference as treated sewage still has medicine in it. after its treated they just dump it back into a river. you actually get micro doses of medicine in you tap water because of this, unless you have ro/di.
