How bout a native sunfish/pygmi sunfish species?

No heater needed.
+1

I have kept many sunfish species and its my personal opinion that they need larger tanks. You could keep one in a 29. They are much more aggressive toward each other then you would think :)

The pgymis should work though! :)

I have a Malawi Cichlid tank in a 29 gallon... been raising the fish for a little over 4 months now. They've been getting along fine (with water changes every 5 days as well as changing the rockscape). If you want to keep them in a 29 gal for their whole life, i'd recommend Demasoni. Their dwarf mbunas, and are fun to keep. Just have to keep an eye on them though and deal with their aggression.

Vid of my tank:

Heres a photo of my tank, although I took out the rock scape last water change for some cleaning.
