You asked for advice... We are ]v[onster fish keepers, but we are also responsible. The advice given to you is from experience, and that is only opinion. If you don't want to take that advice that is your decision. Remember that a minimum tank size means MAXIMUM maintenance. Another thing to think about is that if you go to a LFS, even a reputable one, most will sell you a common plecostomus for your 10 gallon tank. Some of the species of common can attain sizes of 24". Also, at a Petco or Petsmart they will tell you that a pacu can live in a 20 gallon, sometimes 10 gallon, for life, and that they grow to the size of the aquarium. That is false, they will live their life in that tank, but that doesn't mean that it is a full life.

Take what advice you want, we can only advise what we think is right, but ultimately it is your decision to do what you want.

See above (again, it's worth reading twice).

Also, keep in mind that when you come accross like you're not taking the advice, less will be given. Rude replies dont help either. As said before, the decision is ultimately up to you.

Soooo....where was everyone when that dude or chick that kept getting bored with his/her fish and kept "getting rid of them". And we have an invasive species problem because of WHY??? Everyone including two moderators kept incouraging that irresponsible jerk to get more fish.

WyldFya, I would sell you 2 or 3 otos for a 10 gallon, and some lame tetras to go with it. Not a common pleco or pacu. Come in when I am working because I can be a hard @$$ when it comes to selling fish! Please listen to multiple sources because the margin of error will be a lot less. Also, what works for one will not work for another. Keep up on your water changes on that JD and you should be good. I would do 2 a week if I were you because you have less water to take everything and get him a mansion down the road!

First off, good decision taking back the Oscar....................Personally i have 2 30 gallon tanks (and a couple others!) and went through the same dillemma as you....... I ended up getting an adult gold severum for one of the tanks for a nice show piece / talk about tank.............and for my other 30g, .......Well i decided to go with Mini Monsters (Exodon Paradoxis)...AKA.........--Bucktooth tetras--.........Small in stature but enormous hearts and monbster attitudes.....I have about 12 or 13, they move so fast that i cant count them all, very active and interesting fish......................Anyways bro thats what i've got in my 30 g's and no problems in the last year or so............my 2 cents..........later....:) :) :headbang2

I dont know as much about freshwater fish thats why i was asking just for some suggestions im trying to pick the best and biggest fish suitable for the tank.Ive been keeping saltwater fish for a while now i know more about the tank sizes for the saltwater fish. But just too say he would probobly do better in a bigger tank but ill take good care of him ive never missed a water change. But ive made the choice to keep him for now if i have too ill scoop him up with a fishing net when he gets too big and return him but i think hell be alright in there.

You wouldn't sell me anything... The only 10 gallon I have up and running now is a daphnia tank. I use plecos, that is my thing, and otos are good, but not what I would use for algae clean up usually. Plus that would be one LONG drive to get to a petco/petsmart. :D Tetras aren't lame! If you get a big school of them they are an awesome fish, but I leave them to my wife. I'm glad there is someone responsible working at a petco/petsmart. The only corporate that I ever shop at is the Petsmart in Spokane, because I know the manager there is a competant, and responsible fish keeper, as well as a memeber of MFK.

Your JD will do fine. but you will need to do more than normal water changes 20% twice a week or 50% once a week. also keep your decor to a minimum, give him one good place to hide and leave the rest open for swimming. In 6-9 months you will have to decide if this will be the right tank for this fish though.

Some tetras are cool, but there are cooler characins IMO. Also, my store has the district dog trainer in it, so she trains all of the other ones. He was in for a training, and she wasn't there yet, so he and I got talking. He has a DIY 600 gallon African cichlid tank at home, so we do know our fish!
