Fish for a 55 gallon?

What would be the perfect fish for a 55 gallon tank in your opinion? I only want one or two, not three. Freshwater. Dont want to breed.
I cant decide myself so I will let you throw some suggestions at me.

I used to have jack dempseys, still have one actually. They were meen and hated all the other fish. Beautiful fish though, I love their coloration.
