Another idea for heating would be a heat pad. Not sure how you would go about using it... Im sure someone here has used a heat pad and they might know.

Well speaking from a reptile point of view, most sticky heat pads can easily(and come with instructions for) mounting on the sides of the tank. This would probably work since it shouldnt be seen as a fire hazard.

How effective do you think a heating pad would be in terms of heating a fish tank. I think that those heating pads, at least the reptile ones, are designed to warm the bottom of the tank so that the ground is warmer for the reptiles. Do you guys think one of those would work with water, in a tank?

I think it would work best under the tank, but it works by contact and transfering heat to the glass. My reptile pad fell off the tank about a week ago, the pad didnt even feel warm. I reattached it with duct tape and the tank is nice and toasty again. I dont know how well one would work heating up water, but its worth a shot. As is, they are only supposed to raise the temp 10 or so degrees, depending on size. The bigger the pad, the more watts, the more heat. For only a 5 gallon, I think it would work. They also sell some sort of regulator that is supposed to shut it off if it gets too hot so you can regulate your reptiles more, but I dont use those so I dont know much about them. A large pad could also act as a black background, but since I havnt tried it, im not sure what size would work for the volume you need. Too big will warm the water too much, too small and you wont see any difference

Don't be miss negative. IMO getting a fish can keeps a student enteraining while studying for exams. Alot of us have fish tank in their dorm rooms. To my knowledge, nobody try to feed the fishes with crap or beer in the dorms anyways.

aww im not trying to be a negative nancy!:redface: just make sure your going to actually have the time.. but i def think a betta is the best bet. there are some pretty cool ones out there.

as for heating.. those reptile ones will heat up enough to do damage to a wooden top ime. i ruined a dresser or 2 in mu day with those undertank reptile heaters.

well, then definitely mount on the side of the tank and leave some space away from the wall lol.

When I was in a dorm room, I had a 37 and a 10, my roomate had (2) 10s and a 5. I believe the school regulation was for only a 10 gallon but campus security loved the look of our tanks, as did the RA. We were fish majors =)
