7?

This forum is busy, but a lot of it is junk (yeah, I said it) that I browse over. There are gems here too, but you need to dig for them. It's entertaining to drop in here and see who else thinks a barred devil is a butti, etc. Having the most posts doesn't necessarily make this the best. :P (Probably gonna get flamed for that paragraph.)

Most of the other boards I frequent are a lot slower, but the people on them definitely know their stuff, cichild wise.

I used to go on AC years ago, but I've forgotten my log in and pass years ago.

5. 2 more than others. MFK more than any other.

That is the main argument that many other "competing" forums are trying to use against us (perhaps it's because they know there are no other advanced online fish forum that has achieved what MFK has in the short 2 years since we first began). The fact is, each forum must grow with it's members. As those of us who are more experienced and knowledgeable pass this to other members here, we therefore are establishing a community that is potentially one of the best out there not just in terms of activity but as well as quality.

If we all simply ignorantly pass this off as an unworthy forum, then this forum would definitely cease to exist as a fish keeping community. But what we must do if we ever want this forum to reach to a higher standard/level is to educate and share. YOU as a member is what makes this forum WORK.

There are "less usefull threads" in every forum, and in MFK there are loads of them. Nevertheless, while some forums are mostly "bad quality", there are others with good stuff and very knowledgeable people ( I would name AP and WW ), but the point is that they sometimes tend to lack in "momentum"...by which I mean that sometimes there is little going on, threads that don't develop for days. At MFK there is some nonsense, some "my fish is tougher than yours", but there also is a lot of quality, a lot of helpfull and knowledgeable people.

But, imo, MFK stands out for 2 things unattained by other forums ( i) Pace. Nothing compares. Things move in here. This place is lively. And I am not referring to "post countings" - I do not even know the purpose or interest of that or what it gets you- and (ii) sense of community, a certain sense of belonging of being known and wellcome ( or unwellcome ).

I don't visit the cichlid forum a whole lot but I think most of the time nearly every post here no matter the forum gets an answer and a valid one from the info I know. CA/SA Cichlid's tend to be a gateway fish of sorts. Usually one of the first fish younger people tend to own so sometimes there is a younger audience/hobbiest's in those. Not to mention they're a big group of fish so the more popular id's are easy, the rare ones are not. I haven't seen the post you've talked about though.

But I will say I know someone who talks at the ACA who got a fish id here wrong. And you know that person may have some money and think he has some knowledge buy ultimately he's the biggest prick I've ever met online and I leave after asking a simple question wanting to punch him in the mouth. (All of these qualitys are shared by one moderator on WW)

I think everyone on MFK tends to encourage rather than discourage like that said person. And there is no one here not even li that is that much on their high horse here. Probably one of the reasons this forum is so great. It's diverse, tons of info and everyone for the most part is considerate and in it for fun.

12 but this is the main one

I am a member of 5, but for my purposes MFK is all inclusive. The other sites seem to all be structured the same, but there is not the database of info to search or the quality of helpfull members. I for one deal mainly with catfish, it's my passion. Other sites are slow to say the least in their catfish sections, and others (planetcatfish) although they have a ton of good information I can't stand everyone flamming me for keeping large beautiful catfish which I for one feel I provide a great home for. I know they are not for everyone, but why not educate rather than bashing to get your point across. This is the only forum that I frequent, all others are only check irregularly for updates in the catfish sections, which is rare at best. As far as planet catfish goes, great reference site, but if you keep a catfish bigger than 1.5' I would discourage posting anything in their forums about it!
