just look in the tank to see if any fish in there has ich... most times the oscars do not at my store but the fish should be fine. ive bought plenty fish there and only one has had ich which i easily returned

Almost all my fish are from Petsmart. Unfortunately this is because they are the only place within a 100 miles! Having said that our local petsmart is quite good.

Number one rule about shopping for fish: be educated yourself. That'll take you a long way.

They also have some really good deals, like right now some of their stock is only $1. I got a nice school of Albino Tiger Barbs and lunch for $20 - can't beat that!

My local Petsmart does very good with its fish care. I have got some great fish from them in the past. I recently traded in a Jack Dempsey at my LFS that I had bought from Petsmart and had to admit it looked better than the fish he had in stock.

I am also currently raising a Midas that was from Petsmart which is healthy and has a great shape and fullness about him; looks like a brute. But my only complaint is that he's a bit of a runt. After almost 2 years he is only 10". With the care and feeding along with tank size I was expecting a larger fish by now. Time will tell how he turns out.

Overall Petsmart does have nice fish compared to many of the fancier LFS in my area. With some of the best looking oscars I have seen.

What size tank do you have? That is more important than where you get your fish.
