Fish Hatchery internship journal

Im acctualy here right now! And if you don't want to wait for me to post pictures when I have internet on my computer, the add me on facebook and go check out my picture album.

THE BEGINNING:

May 22, 2011
I arrived at the fish hatchery at 8pm, and Tim was waiting for me. He showed me around and talked for a bit. Firt impression of the room and place ill be livving for close to 3 months is its not to shabby. I have running water, lights, a nice clean bathroom with shower and everything, a decent sized room (although messy from previouus projects) , the bed is decently soft. My kitchen is not to bad eithe.

Now I don't know if you couldn't tell if you were at a fish hatchery or not, but upon oppening the. Freezer, there are fish filets, fish skeletons, and loads of little fingerling fish that are in viles for display at museums and other misc stuff.

I made my way to walmart to get some groceries, which btw I've never done by myself haha! I bought all kinds of goodies, $136 worth hahah! I bought decently healthy stuff, no fruits or vegetables, but I did get meat and cereal hahaha!

Tomorrow is my first day working. We start at 730am monday- friday and go till 330 pm. After that, the day is mine and I can leave when ever I want. I brought my compound bow and shooting block so ill be getting ready for bow season commin up soon!

hahahaa!! First time grocery shopping huh??!! my little baby is growing up so fast.. lol!! jk... good read, I love it.. !! Good Luck on your first night! I'll be looking for ya on FB. .. :D

Started my day at 7AM with a donut and a cup of milk haha BREAKFAST OF A CHAMPION!!!! i threw on some boots and my dickie jeans and headed out to the pond where teh fingerling walleye were being drained out into nets.

here's my outfit (i know yall will like this haha)

it weas a little rainy and drousy looking out side so we hurried and collected about 170,000 one inch walleye (check picture for size reference). We put all the fish into the back of trucks and drove them the 100 yards tot he hatchery where we weighed them all and put them into the trough's.

in the above picture you can see tyler (long hair) Tim (older guy w/ clipboard) ryan (hard to show lol) and julious (or what ever...like cesar's first name haha)

once we got all the fish (around 55,000) loaded up and into the truck, a guy drove them 2 hours away to their new home in a lake in WV.

I then went and washed out the trucks and got them ready for tomorrow (draining 2 ponds and doing almost the same thing as today).

here is a pic of the hatchery's indoors section where we weight and measure teh fish

So here you can see one of the ponds, its about 2 acres and 1-2 million gallons of water each. and there are 34 ponds on this site.

This is us dumping in liquid calcium to help comtrol the alkalinity and whatnot in the water.

and finally we are about to the end of the day and all we had to do was put this paddler out onto the stripped bass pond (which we will be getting 80,000 fingerlings of tomorrow morning).

this thing sits int he water and spins those paddles and creates more oxygen in the pond and helps add a bit of current to the pond as well.

We stopped at 330pm and everyone just kinda left, so i made myself some noodles and chips haha. little alone time untill me and ryan go out and fish the LMB pond of the property, there are some 4 pounders in there that are now eating their babies, so we have to move them to another pond so they will spawn again.

ehh a few, 2 6"ers. but there are atleast 5 other different fish!
