I caught this fish in a pond near my parents house. Is it a bluegill? If not, what type of perch is it?

Lepomis auritus Redbreast Sunfish. If your in Houston, it's not native. They've invaded most of the state.

Thanks so much! I've caught these types many times in various lakes around The Woodlands area (40 miles north of Houston). I think they stock these lakes when they make them.

:D That looks like a nice sized sunfish no matter what it is, he'd make a good sandwich.

Yeah, they get big, and I think that's why people originally stocked them. They're just outcompeting the natives... so I hope you made a sandwich outta him. And the next, and the next...

Looks like a blue gill to me as well. Doesn't have the red tint that red-breasted sunfish have.

Looked like a bluegill to me too, but I haven't caught one in a long time so I thought I may have been mistaken. There's more green sunfish and longears around here than bluegill so I rarely catch them anymore. I don't think I've caught a bigger one since I was a teenager in fact.

I used to catch these all the time. Blue Gill Crossed with Sun Pearch. Not Native though.
