My lfs has a fish labeled "African Cichlid", I've never seen a fish like it before and would like to figure out what it is. It is currently about 3 inches and is coloured just like a calico goldfish, red/orange, white and black.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which africans have this kind of colouration?

its some type of "OB" or orange blotch cichlid....

Thank you. From pictures I think it might be an OB peacock. I'll try to bring my camera next time I go in. If it is a peacock it would be really aggressive wouldn't it?

Oh I was just curious about the fish. I won't be buying it, it wouldn't go with any of my fish. My stock list is in my signature.:) None of my fish are really aggressive, so compared to them I guess.

Actually that Jack Dempsey will eat the rainbows, woop the rears and try to kill all the other fish once he matures :D

She's a female, pretty calm. She scraps with the Eartheater every now and then but that's it. She gives chase once in a blue moon, but has never nipped. I sold the male because he was a jerk lol!

IME when they label the fish all general like that or they say "assorted" it usually means they are most likely not pure but are mutts and crossbreeds. could it be possible that this is a combo of different africans?

It sounds like a African, and don't mix with the Americans anyway. Ob's can be more aggressive than most peacocks.
