fish id? (giant gourami)?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The guarantee was intended to apply to our mistakes. They sold you the wrong fish. If they don't make that right, they don't deserve your business.

My lfs did the reverse. They sold me a blue gourami that turned out to be a Giant gourami (Osperonemus gorami) . So my little blue gourami out grew 5 tanks and is now in a 240gal and still growing :nilly:.
(see sig link)

Yes see pic in last post that is the giant. Yours is the common gold form gets to maybe 5 inches. Incidently snakeskin gouramis will get close to 10 and look pretty cool. As was said if that clown will not make right then tell him to shove it.

Actually they are capable of reaching 1'. I saw 5-6 10-12 inchers at an lfs in southern Indiana a few months ago.

That is nothing more than a color strain of the blue gourami or 3 spot gourami. It is called a lavender gourami! You pretty much paid triple to quadruple what the fish is worth! Heck I went to Pestmart and got a real Giant Gourami for $5 under it's proper name!

That's actually a pretty common gourami. My grandmother had 2 and they got to about 4 inches in length................

I thought it was going to be a pic of C. faciata (Banded/Giant gouramy). That sucks, I'd take it back.

knifegill has a very good and legitimate point. The guarantee was for our mistakes. Not for the mistake the fish shop made of not selling you the right fish. The fish they sold you should only cost at the most 3 to 5 dollars. If they don't make it right, by correcting their mistake, then I would by all means, return the fish with a reciept, ask for my money back and take my business to a different retail fish shop if possible.

No need to "Blackball" them. They'll do that themselves. Their reputation will start to be known and eventually, they'll either straighten up and fly right or eventually go out of business. Either way it's just a matter of time.

And one other piece of sound advise if I may here. When you go to look for a fish, make sure you know what you're purchasing before you spend your money. If you do not know what it looks like, look it up in books at your local library, the internet, ask an experienced MFK member who know the species, an MFK Advisor, and if they don't know, someone will help guide you as to where to look. When you find out the correct information, get a written physical discription, and also take along a photo of the creature you are wanting to get. Maybe at three different stages of it's life. small medium and large stages during it's growth. Maybe some pic's of it during a mating period do to color morph transformations of either males or females. If the creature doesn't look like or closely resemble the creature you're after, don't purchase it. If there is any doubt in your mind, don't purchase it.

But NEVER, NEVER, NEVER take the advise of a local fish shop owner, who's going to make money off of you. 85% to 95% of the time, they will mislead you to the side of error or they will come right out and be decieving and lie. Most times, you will not know or realize it until the damage is done.

I hope this helps with your purchases in the future. Best of luck to you, in getting your exchange on the correct fish or refund of the entire transaction. Just remember, either one (exchange) or the other (refund) and nothing halfway in between (store credit). It might help too if you take your parents with you when this happens.
