Fish ID- Guppy-ish (non-monster)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
that might be good for me in the long run. They can be more focused on producing fry that won’t produce more fry ?
Then I can maybe end up with awesome looking fish that pop in the galvanized tank. I want bright colored fish since I can only spy on them from the top of the water.
Worse case scenario I could look into feeding the excess ones to my cichlids. Still not familiar with the safety of home-grown feeders and whether it’s good for the fish. That’s another topic though.
As long as they are eating good high quality food they would be a good high quality treat for your cichlids. They are far better for your fish compaired to your average feeder goldfish.

could be the feeder guppies I got from LFS were mixed with others. I had baby platys in that tank before (they got moved to the 180gal), they don’t look similar imo. They look like some kind of a barb and guppy got down.

I appreciate all your responses. MFK remains my favorite hobby forum ?

Platy/Swordtail/Variatus hybids come in a variety of body shapes. Grow them out, what's the worst that can happen lol

They turn out to be extremely hardy, quick breeding, escape into local waterways, multiply exponentially, devour all food sources available, spread, wipe out all life in those waterways, escape onto land roaming in a massive scourge that makes the Candiru seem like a pleasant cuddle.

Here are some mosquitofish ( Gambusia nicaraguense ) I caught in Lake Gatun Panama to compare, however; there are many Gambusia species and variations in markings and color from one geographic location to the next. G holbrookii, G affines, or Heterandia formosa .
In Mexico there are color differences Cenote to Cenote separated by only a few miles.

These two Cenotes were barely 20 miles apart

? so many suggestions.
I just texted the guy who gave me the guppies and other fish with pictures of the ones in question.
If he says those are the fish he couldn’t remember the name of, at least we’ll know they’re not hybrids and can go from there.

Amazing videos!! I think you may have been the person who showed me a video of wild Mayan cichlids waaay back in the day.

Update on the fish in this post ?
I had moved 4-5 of them from the 20gal to a plastic bin with plants and they overwintered (coastal so cal) there. Just fished them out a month or so ago so that the native frogs could use the bins for their tadpoles, and they ended up in a vacant 60gal with some gambusia (and now green terror babies).
just thought I’d update with a video of a male trying to woo a lady.
There are two pairs
