Thats not a spot, Nor a bite mark. Its an infection, Looks like a couple are forming. Without treatment it will get worse and will leave a bigger scar. The fray at ALL fins and the whiteness isnt a good sign either. Id suggest some salt, increase heat, and melafix befor things get worse.

He looks healthy to me. Are Mayans prone to HITH or something?

from the picture, I just see a slightly ragged fish that has been thru some rough times . . . give him time to adjust before doing any random medicating

is he in QT, or is he in with other fish right now?

I think its a hybrid of some sort. Ive had several mayans in the past and none of them ever had white on the fins, had red tips on their fins or had broken vertical stripes like this one does. Even on google images, not a single one has the broken pattern that this fish, everyone is stating is 100% mayan, has.

Yeah I thought the same thing. I have had several Mayans and I have seen really large ones and none of them had this pattern and white in the fins. This could just be a variant and not a hybrid at all. But I lean closer to hybrid. Either way, keep a sharp eye on the wound and torn fins. It should go away with good food and water changes. It looks like you will have a nice fish in a few months.

maybe it is a festae/mayan cross? is that even possible? just putting that out there as the dorsal fin kind of looks like how a female festae's does and the broken bars look like they are right where the four would form on a pure festae...

good point. With all of the places they are feral, it very well could be a variation or natural hybrid at that, as well.

yep, the front verticals definitely lean more towards that being the mix, if it is possible. I dont know and havent ever seen one on here that I can remember.

Mayans are very prone to HITH, ann I even saw wild mayans in Mexico w/ HITH. I would start treating ASAP before it gets worse and those scars may never heal. You can buy meds or treat by using aqaurium salt and lots of water changes.

That's the way I see him at the moment too (been through some rough times), and I completely agree with not randomly medicating him until he's had some time.

As for QT, to be honest I've never really QT'd a fish. I know what risks that brings but luckily I've escaped any issues.

That would be awesome if he was a Festae x Mayan, if that's possible. I thought he looked a bit of from a Mayan as well, but I was thinking it might be because he's still youngish. I guess time will tell, but I'll definitely post some more pictures soon once he fully settles in.

Alright, well it's been a couple days now and he's starting to settle in nicely. So today I decided to try and get a couple better shots of him.

I'm starting to get confused whether he's a Mayan, a Festae, or a hybrid of them, because I've come to realise that his left side is solidly striped like a Mayan, yet his right side has the bar break and '4' mark that Festaes have.. so I turn back to you, experts of MFK - you be the judge!

And a great shot I managed to catch, also of his right side:

I'd also like to take the time to apologize to FishingOut for semi-arguing with him over the HITH issue. I'm definitely on the same page as you now, though I'm hoping to see some signs of improvement now that he's with me, assuming his former tank conditions and diet caused it.
