Fish ID Help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I picked up some fish for free off of a guy that was moving out of state and could use some help IDing a couple of them. I'm thinking maybe a Jack Dempsey or a Flowerhorn for the one with the nuchal hump. And wasn't sure on the black and blue one either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The one with the hump is definitely a flowerhorn. Looks like a red dragon/zz. Definitely a gorgeous fish I love the amount of blue on him. Be careful though I see the banded leo which are known to be aggressive but since it’s not in with other leos I wouldn’t worry about it too much other than it getting too aggressive during feedings. Also the flowerhorn is a male so before too long he most likely is gonna snap and become extremely aggressive and I don’t think the Severum or jd have to good of a chance against a Flowerhorn and leo. Just my opinion
Edit: Banded lep*

My lep harassed my sev when the sev grew close to the lep’s size. That was in a much smaller tank though. I’d monitor.
Honestly my lep is least aggressive at feeding time. It’s every other time that he’s an a hole. They don’t like competition. Bigger guys get lazier though.

Knew it would be you to respond to it lol. I would have thought they’d get aggressive and try to outcompete others during feeding. I’m worried about the lep and flowerhorn most of all. I don’t know about the lep but flowerhorn are curious and pick at everything. I’m worried that the flowerhorn is going to get on the Leps nerves and start a fight

Leps are famous for being fin nippers. A fight would probably be mutual. Fh is definitely the most belligerent of the mix. I see the fh going for cichlids first, the Mayan or jd would give it a run for its money.

In all respect I can’t see a jd doing to well against a flowerhorn. The Mayan would be a bit nerve racking though. With this stocking I feel like fighting is inevitable and that it’s going to cause a bunch on long term problems. I feel like the flowerhorn is going to be the biggest issue

The flowerhorn is also a male and looks like his kok is going to get to a pretty decent size which added with all the tankmates and decor in the tank I see nothing but a bunch of problems. Flowerhorn tend to not notice they have a tennis ball ontop of their head and scrape it a lot on anything that can and with all the wood and rocks in the tank I’m worried that the flowerhorn is going to run into something and damage his kok

I never said either would win…amazing how such a messed up fish (fh) can be so mean. I would definitely look into rehoming.

The rest of the mix (minus the aro) should probably work out okay as far as compatibility goes. Jd and Mayan occupy the same same regions in nature. 220 gives good enough space for the lep, jd, and Mayan to all stake out territories. The geos and sevs would also probably do fine.
