FISH ID PLEASE

Green sunfish are pioneer species... Means they are first species to arrived in new areas before other fish species do. Green sunfish is also highly invasive species. They're adaptable, hardy, early sexually mature at tiny sizes and has a wide diet of various foods. They're fully capable to spawning more than once in a year, unlike other sunfish species.

Feeder goldfish are raised outside in ponds, and green sunfish sometimes end up in said ponds. They're actually pretty good aquarium fish- like an oscar, but on the aggressive side. Big mouths, not fussy, lots of personality, etc.

How big was the fish? It looked fairly small to be dying of old age. My female is 2 years old and she's already just upward of 6".

It looks fairly big to me.....but you have to remember that many green sunfish do not get big, rarely surpass 6".

No they are not.
Yes they are, it's already proven, which that is why the green sunfish are most common sunfish species and they are one of few fish species that appeared magically in an isolated fishless water body without any human activities. With human activities, the green sunfish spreads more rapidly and appeared in many areas which it is become difficult to know what is actual native range of green sunfish before the human activities took a place.

Magically appeared lol. If a green sunfish is a pioneer species what will it eat in a new environment? Take a green sunfish put it in a isolated pool or tank with no other major life and see how long it survives with no food.

Pioneer species are usually autotrophic or decompossers. There might be some simple insects or bugs which can be a pioneer species. Animals that are primarily predators and needs to eat other life to survive can't be a pioneer species. This is because there will be nothing to eat when they pioneer their new environment.

Many fishless water bodies are always full of life. Aquatic invertebrates, amphibian larvaes, terrestrial insects and some plant matter are what the green sunfish eats. Occasionally the green sunfish may turn into cannibal in some conditions. After all green sunfish are high adaptable species that they can survive in almost all freshwater systems anywhere.

How about we refer to green sunfish as pioneer fish? They definitely aren't the first species to arrive, but they're often the first fish. It's though that their eggs can get stuck to the feet of waterbirds and be spread that way. Also, there are multiple accounts of green sunfish moving through barely an inch of water during heavy rains and/or floods when their original home gets too crowded.
