Fish ID plz JD?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah i agree, OPs fish looks like a jewel, these guys can be nasty, i had a breeding pair of hybrid jewels in my tank because i wanted them to make feeders for my bigger guys and although constantly laying eggs they always ate them and just caused havoc in my tank, they definitely have an attitude to them, they tore up my old BGK so bad i had to put him down :( but yeah they looked exactly like yours just more red

You Said you paid 10 for them in my area I get them anywhere between 4 and 6 bucks. I had 4 In my tank and had to get rid of them cuz they were going after my bigger fish like crazy and they attacked my arm as well as i was cleaning my tank they are nice looking fish and have some nice colors. I like the Jewel i have now which is a a5 Spot Jewel Cichld which has some nice color and really isnt aggressive as of yet. He is about 5 in. This pic is when he was like 4 in when I bought this guy at the LFS they said this guy was brought back like 5 times cuz he was so aggressive and since i have had him when he was 3 in over 4 months now he has not killed or gone after anything

While I know mine is fairly new to the tank and not quite as big, the convicts keep him on his toes so far. Now that he has settled down some more, this morning he has a LOT more red in him. Very interesting info. Thanks all!

Looks male too. Your fish looks about 2-3", a female would have blue all over gill plate and 'chin'

Yeah, the Jewel is about 3.5" I have 4" ID PVC in there for some of the tunnels atm and he just about touches both sides when he turns around in there. The JD is maybe 2-2.5, just a wee baby.

I think both fish are JD's. The first fish is most likely just stressed and lighter color than usual from not having any gravel...plus the flash could also be distorting the color. Wait a bit for the fish to settle in and take some new pics, hopefully a little closer and better side view of the fish.
