Fish ID, some sort of tilapia or ????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A "not big" tilapia is as you said, about 8 to 10 inches. There are a couple rarer Oreochromis that are more like 5-8 inches, but those are rare and can usually only be bought from specialty breeders online, and even then, they are rarely available.

But luckily for you, yours is on the smaller side of the scale - 8 inches or so.
The rest grow over a foot long. But alas, the mariae is one of the more aggressive ones.

i should have taken a pic of the one i seen in s fl.
it was way over a foot long and i bet around a foot tall "bottom to top".
it was huge.
the mariae is one of the more aggressive ones.
i dont think thats all that true.
ones i had were nice, the mean t's were the mozombique.
yes the marie isnt a guppy but compared to some fish there nice.lol :D

The mariae is known for its aggressiveness. The mossambicus are generally only aggressive when males are breeding, then they turn nasty. Most Oreochromines are pretty mellow except for a few species that are given to chasing and biting such as niloticus. The Tilapia ssp are more aggressive - especially mariae and buttikoferi.
