I'm certainly no expert either; I'm just trying to learn these guys myself.

Kafiltafisch: a few characters to look for in baby bluegill are the long, pointed pectoral fin (greens have a short, rounded pectoral), 8-10 "hollow" looking vertical bars on the sides (green sunfish have a variable pattern, but won't have the hollow bars) and a small mouth. Bluegill and greens may both have a dark spot in the dorsal fin, but usually bluegill will only have it if they are at least 2" long.

Greens will also have a dark spot on the anal fin in conjunction with the one on the dorsal, bluegill won't.

As for who here is an expert I'll admit that I am, you were right on the ball with that one. :D Seriously though I'm no expert, far from it. I still have a lot to learn but it is my passion and I do as much learning as I can when I can.

Im sure we dont need new pictures, they are already green sunfish, not hybrids, bluegills, redears or pumpkinseed. I feel sorry for you man that you love to be right all time and proved us that your man at everything....yeah right.:screwy:

Remember redear v.s pumpkinseed thread? it turn out its only pumpkinseed. And you thought my green x pumpkinseed hybrid's either greengill or redear because you ID them based on colors but there are no redears in Minnesota and i dont think my hybrid are greengill because I dont see any bluegills traits, only green and pumpkinseed traits.

Sandtiger, Noto and teleost are experts on ID the natives, they're good and I trust them. (I'm Butch by way) I find your excuses' full of BS.

Young sunfish are often colorless and NOT SEXUALLY MATURE which often involved with the coloration.
the redear was just a guess all i now is that fish isnt a pseed ( full bread ) if it wasnt a redear then it was a hybrid. i have never seen a colorless green sunfish even the small ones her in MI got a neat little pattern. you guys can keep telling people the wrong ids, and will always win cuz iam out numbered. if we do get new pics and i can tell for sure its a green then i will gladly say iam wrong but untill then its a hybrid in my view.

What gets me is that you, a 16 y/o kid think that you know more than the combined knowledge of all of us who are not only older than you but also far more experienced. That boggles my mind. There are people here that have taken extensive classes, taught classes, read countless texts, made a profession out of fishes and have been collecting since before you were even born! And seriously, how many times do we have to tell you FISH CHANGE COLOR!!! You're killing me here! Have you really never seen a washed out fish before?
And I'm sorry I even have to bring it up but you're still wrong about that pumpkinseed. The fact that you can confuse the two only shows that you have no idea what you're talking about. Here is a hint for future reference...redears don't have wavy iridescent lines on their cheek, pumpkinseeds do. Remember that!

If you know what a washed out fish looks like and are aware that they can change color as rapidly as they do then why are you so fixated on the fish's color?
Last time I looked at your profile you were 16, either way it makes no difference, you're still young and inexperienced.

How do you you know you "out identified" the DNR? Did you simply scream louder than them :D

Not to knock various state DNR personnel but some people that work for various DNR's are truly experts while some others flunked out of cop school. Some have a real interest in all things wild but they can't focus on just fish, they have to know wildlife law and perfect enforcement (not fish ID).

No new pics today guys, although I did get a couple more in with the feeders today :D I will try for pics tomorrow... I can tell you that out of the tank, their cheeks have a purple sheen to them...Dunno if that helps anyone lol

I was fishing the pier and caught a brown the size of the cohos we were catching approx 10-15 inchs. this brown had no spots and looked to the unknowing person just like the coho. My dad told me it was a coho. In the parking lot there was the local Dnr i asked him to identify the fish he picked it up looked it over and said its just a coho. I said look at it again look at the mouth and the way the tail is forked. He said your are right the mouth has no black and is trout shaped and the tail is not as forked as a coho.It is a brown he said.
