the picture was bad and i couldn't see a resemblence from the bluegil im used to catching. but i have been wrong plenty of times. i just thought the sunfish looked a little closer then any other fish i have caught.

Blue gill have a black dot in the rear portion of the dorsal fin. I can't see clearly, but I can't see a dot.

Ok, this paste job came out huge.... but you can see the dot I am referring too.

nice bluegill!

Thats a young gill and in fright coloration, all normal markings dont show up like that painted pic of a mature fish.

The dot will show up on a dead and preserved specimen that has been in formalin for 10 years. The dot IS diagnostic.

But maybe not in a poor quality picture where you can't even clearly make out that portion of the dorsal fin. If you had said fish in your hand, I'm sure you'd see the dot. It IS a bluegill

...actually, looking at the picture again-it may just be that I know the dot is supposed to be there-I think I CAN just barely make it out

My original post says... I can't see clearly. That was my point, the OP needs to clarify if there is a dot there or not as it cannot be seen in the photo. And no one can make a positive ID on the fish without knowing if its there or not. There are other Lepomis that have the dot, so the dot being there is not a guarantee, but the absence of the dot is a guarantee that its not a blue gill.
