Can anyone tell me what fish this is please. Picked it up today but the Local Fish store didn't know. Its the large one. Had a black strip to start with and when settled in to new tank has a black spot with vertical grey stripes . Thx

Welcome aboard

Gourami Swami Gourami Swami
duanes duanes

It’s beautiful whatever it is and I wouldn’t mind keeping it in the future, hopefully duanes or gourami swami knows what it is. Or perhaps dan518 dan518 knows what it is.

Here is a Cichlasoma dimerus I had to compare, maybe the OPs fish needs to settle in to show true colors.

And I agree with GS looks to be an Aequidens, or Cichlasoma, or some other Acara. The spot on the caudal (being mostly in the upper half) as opposed to covering the entire height of the caudal lends itself to being South American, as opposed to Central/North American cichlids.

This is an interesting dilemma, because yesterdays shot had the long horizontal band, but today's show the vertical dark band book ended with two white vertical bands.
I went over photos of all the genera that seemed close, and todays shot almost appears to be from the genus Krobia,
K guiniensus has the long almost unbroken horizontal band
and on the other hand, K potaroënsis sports the two vertical white bands around a mid body darker blotch, but neither species quite matches, and both show much more brown and other colors.
OP, Your substrate is very white, and very bright, so I wonder if it is influencing the fish to "not" show true colors.
Often a bright, white substrate causes fish to wash out, especially when in new to a tank (for them).
