Fish in Captivity: The Moral Issue

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You know, it's strange. But with all of the atrocities being committed by my fellow human beings, I just can't seem to get emotionally worked up about having an aquarium.

I pretty much agree with what you had to say and I do think that for the most part, this hobby is very destructive in so many ways. For every "responsible" fish keeper, there are thousands of pet-killing goons, fish poachers and corrupt pet stores and collectors who pay top dollar to get what they want at all costs.

Which is why I keep a massively understocked 2000gallon tank with all commonly kept species and the only wild caught ones being clown loaches, which are common in their native environments. I can tell that they are all happy, healthy and unstressed.

That was a really long post, i read the first paragraph. KEEPING fish is different that HAVING fish. What does that mean? I can't remember how many times I have read "you need a bigger tank" in a post. A fish should not have conditions which are cramped, all aspects of the fish's well being is considered when KEEPING fish. I agree with EWURM, there's no predators and plenty of food in my tank! What more could a fish want?

I think the only factor that's hard for a responsible fish keeper to meet is space requirements...the amount of space a fish "needs" is made up by fishkeepers. IMO, impossible to tell whether we're giving adequate conditions(although we can try our best) til we learn to talk to fish lol

I think its alright if you "keep/have" fish as long as you have them in optimum conditions that might even be better than if they were out in the wild! However, its probably worse, when people eat them, than those who "keep" them. Heck my friend is an animal activist, and he has 2 fish. Why? Because his friend was going to throw them out and he'd rather take care of them than see them die. See? So even an animal activist can have fishies ;)
Done, and done!
