big corporations NEVER do water changes ever. Overpriced fish that never sell just sit there until they eventually die.

You never see them do it but Petsmart's filtration system does a water change every 4 hours.

I have to disagree with some of this. I worked for a national chain pet store back when I was in college. We had an awesome fish staff that really cared. Animals got optimal treatment, multiple feedings daily and great water quality (from both H20 changes and filter cleaning). I can't think of time when we had an animal that didn't sell or just stayed the same size. I will say that often times even though that animal looks the same, it was a new animal. I personally was accused of things similar to this. Any sick animal was treated in a quar. tank, nothing was ever put down, given to staff or left un-accounted for.

I also hear what you mean about companies treating them like a product rather than an animal. But, not all places are like that.

I agree totally. I used to run the fish dept. of a national chain and the fish were treated with respect. frest veggies or live food every day. Water changes, QT tanks. You name it we bent over backwards for the fish. and reptiles, and sm furries. We spent over $200 to save a $5 hampster.

The truth is they are there to make money and food costs money the fish are a commodity so to kill them is not good for business over feeding means more cleaning means more work means more staff looking after them. my friend shop is great but as he told me you can start feeding one day and if its mental in there you wont get round half the tanks I bought a 12in snakehead out of a shop (I must add no one I personally know)it was in a 2 ft tank you or eye would not do this but as the man in the shop said he couldn't put it with other fish because it eats them!!!!!!!!! well done bad for him good for me got an Indian snakehead for £10 as he needed space as for Zoodiver I think your shop was the exception because I have friends in the trade and what I have see with my own eyes in shops I go into for example the snakehead shop the story was he sold a customer the snakehead who bought it found it had eaten all his fish then he bought it back 4 times its original size bad advice also a bad fish for some one that hasn't got a clue

I am not sure, I know a few lfs here that def. take good care of their fish, The petsmart here for the most of them treat their fish pretty good. They are always big and seem well fed the tanks always look clean and I ve talked to a few of the workers before and some of them are into monster fish and one guy I talked to had a 300gal African tank =) he said one reason he started there was to make sure they treated the fish right if not then he could. I though that was cool, I think it also has alot to do with whos running and owns the lfs or in big chains who the employees and management are in that particular dept. I ve seen other lfs treat their fish very poorly and always seem to have dead fish in the tank, I try not to go there anymore it makes me sad.
