Ok i was told friday that one of my fish jumped. my dad came down stairs and found something on the floor?, he didnt know what it was so he kinnda poked it with his foot... It moved. so appon further inspection its a fish... more then likely one of my 3 large algea eaters. the cichlids and CAE's chase eachother around all the time. like a pass time. well sometimes they really get into it one jumps hits the protective glass cover and falls back down...

My dad though it was dead since it was dry. but once he picked it up, it kindof flopped in his hand... not knowing how to revive a fish properly he tossed it into the tank. well he said that it sank to the bottom. when he came back it 10 min later was gone.

well the only fish looking worse for ware on sunday was the biggest algea eater at 5-6" long. Its back fin is tatered and its back on the right side looked ruffled as it i scrapped it with a knife. at first i thought that it got Droopsy(sp?) where the scales stood up. although unlikely... i added a drip of salt and added melafix. now today it looks like fluffy cotton So today i trated with a full dose of pimafix i want to treat with pimafix and melafix since it looks like it has a open sore and fungus on its back... but not sure...

Here is a pic i got., there is sone algea on the glass and i dont want to clean it since it will scare it away...

the tank is 90gal. water change is bi monthly, lots of plants. water chemistry is normal. NA is higher, needing a change, but not out of the ordanary.

this CAE is 6-7 years old right now.

BTW... i think that the damage on its back was caused by it laying on the floor. whick is pergo. washed with MR clean not more then 4 days earler... But now as you can see in the pic. its skin around the White stuff seems raised like its burned away...

There is more then 50lb of Lava rock in there for hiding spaces and at first i thought that the dumb thing wedged it self between two and caused the damage, but today it looks 10 times worse then it did sunday...

I dont know, it may just be an injury/skin irritation. I think jsut having the water clean and keeping an eye on it, it will heal. Maybe add some salt. You culd add some stress coat it may help.

i added the salt. the skin irritation is a FO-SHO!... melafix is a stress coat no?

Those things are tough... and GLITTENS!. one of them is bigger around then it is long(not-quite), ate a whole fish. one of my smaller cichlids died a few weeks back. and one of the algea eaters was chewing on it. i went to pull it out and she attacked the net, lol.

So i left it in there, she dragged the carcas into the back and contined to chew on it till it was gone three days later. towards the third day the other three finished it off... THEY ARE SUPPOSTO CLEAN GLASS not eat fish... Geeez...

lol... i think that to be true... BUT its pergo :D i think that the floor cleaner did it in... Of corse i have no idea if its the CAE that jumped. as my dad cant tell the differance between a tetra and a flounder, besides ita size... i think more then any thing a fish on the floor scared the carap out if him, and im glad he tossed it back in.

The last thing i went looking for was my fire bellied newt. found it 20' away two days later under the dripping boiler... :D

i would do more frequent water changes. bi monthly is pretty infrequent. Clean water can heal alot

yes i know. but the water is kept in check due to the fact that everything that isnt glass and sand is COVERED in red/brown algea. bi monthly is more then adiquit. monthly is ok even. the plants and algea do a really really good job.

But this want caused by bad watter, it was caused by the fish falling on a dirty floor that just got washed.

Once Fungus gets into a tank it wont just go away. it will eventually... but not quick enough. i might be wrong but thats my understanding of things.

I keep going back and forth on the algea issue. on one side it clogs my filters when it breaks off. but on the other helps filtration in another way. ???
