Fish keeping longevity and why

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Current 300 gallon tank is way too small. Been trying to upgrade for six years. The last four year delay has been over a stupid background. Ours is the longest tank upgrade in the history of fish forums.

After much delay, the background panels were painted in November 2014. Unfortunately, the epoxy sealer was too old, improperly mixed, and carelessly allowed to drip in pipe fitting threads and onto joint edges. Discovered a few panels had spots where the Polygem epoxy had detached from the foam, necessitating repair work and touch up painting, trying to match what the artist had painted in November. Life has a way of interfering. In the past year I had general anesthesia six times for four surgeries and two other procedures. Three of the surgeries were on my finger, leaving me unable to use my right hand for months. I am finally at the point that the panels need to be sanded and re-epoxied and drips ground off....it's raining here...will have to work on the front porch.

Biggest accomplishment this year is being able to claim being a two time cancer survivor. Our fish desperately need their new home. Best be getting off this computer and start sanding...

Started keeping fish in 09.. and like everything else I do, went in 110%.. first tank is my 1700 gallon.

I have control issues...

I started fish keeping a bit over three years ago with one tank including the typical bread and butter tropicals because I was (and still am, even more now) addicted to fishing and had a desire to see fish constantly even when at home. At this point I have a 16 tank fish room (downgrading to 4-5 larger tanks soon) full of native species like cyprinids, darters, sunfish, perch, catfish, etc. Dream is to have a multi thousand gallon tank full of lake trout and a big several hundred gallon one with brook trout some day.

When I was growing up we always had big catfish, had several tsn and rtc an arrowana. My first tank was a crayfish that I had caught in a creek, had toads as well, but my first fish aquarium had a Brown bullhead that I had caught while fishing, I had it a little over a year and we went on vacation for a week and the lady over fed it and water quality killed it. My parents were friends with a lfs owner so we got to babysit all kinds of cool critters from gators to tortoises. I've been hooked on big catfish ever since I was a kid. The wife and I had a parrot fish for almost 13 years, he moved cross country with us and recently went to the aquarium in the sky. I now have a speckeled bullhead in a 55 gallon and my snapping turtle is in a 75. I am in process of building a 300 gallon for turtle, the 55 will be used as a sump and the catfish will be moved to the 75. Some day when I can sweet talk wife enough, I want to get a goonch cat. My daughter is getting into aquarims now, she has some crayfish that she caught and a bullfrog as well that she caught

My girlfriends mom gave us a 10 gallon a little over a year ago and we set it up in our apartment and filled it with guppies. 2 months later I bought a 55 gallon and thats been up and running for a year or so with haps in it, and now I work for the guy that has some of the largest aquariums in the state of Maine.

ohh and shortly after getting the 55 I bought a used 125 and resealed it. just haven't gotten it running yet

I started fish keeping back in high school 92' and my fish tank was a jar with a betta. Fell in love with bettas and the collection grew. As time and school went by I slowly drifted away. Really didn't get hooked on till 2005 and that's when I reignited my passion for bettas again. Started breeding them and trade or sell them off to fund my small collection of monster fish. Arrowanas and barracudas mainly. Went from monsters to cichlids to Africans and back to monsters. Now it's my mini- monsters exodons with the exception of 7 bettas. I just find the bettas so graceful.
