Fish-Keeping Myths?????????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i heard a story of a huge flathead racking the skin and most of the flesh off of a man's arm when he was noodling. when u noodle, u also run the risk of being bitten by venomous snakes and other animals.

I have seen them suck down ducks so I believe it. I have also been bitten by one about 3' long, and I bled from a whole lot of shallow cuts and had a hell of a bruise.

Catfish biting off mans foot>>> ever heard of NOODLING? Crazy, no, insane men get in muddy water up to their chests, and stick their hands into holes in the mud, or between tree roots till a HUGE catfish takes a bite. Then, with his hand, or entire forearm in the catfish's mouth, throw it up in the boat, or on land. Worse damage I saw (never in person) was a bit of blood from scratches.

I saw a video on noodling and it was on Dirty Jobs. It was quite interesting. I heard that catfish that big won't taste good anymore because of their age and their living habits change from swimming around to just ambushing through a hole in the mud (which they live in).

so can a fish really break an aquarium by running into the side....i've heard that tsn are capable of this when they are big

In all the noodling footage ive seen no one has had any serious damage besides cuts and bruises, that was from catfish up to about 3 ft, I wonder what the giant 9 ft suckers could do? they are more worried about snakes, otters and drowning from getting their arm stuck in a hole. I always hear about people drowning(not from noodling) in Castaic lake(nearby lake) and the rescue divers being scared off by 6ft+ catfish?

yes there are some tank busting large cichlids out there that deffinitly will ram the glass so hard they brake it so thats a true myth.

im sure a mekong catfish could eat a dead body in the river, if you didnt see the article they get to be over500 pounds and are as big as bears.

ok i got two new myths, one fish cant see out of the water, - first has anyone ever try to walk up to a trout stream on sunny day? all you see is trout go flying for cover,

second is when divers come try to find a volkswagon beetle that went off a bridge, after a few minutes of serching they see the car and swim closer to get a better look and find out its really a catfish as big as a car.

wow

A customer mentioned this to me over the week end.....

"we don't need to clean our tank very often because we have a catfish that eats all the waste"

I asked "what eats the cat fishes waste?" Then I set them straight on the facts. They didn't like my explaination, it involved actually having to work on the aquarium.

They won't be back, they are happier with the local chain stores advise of adding cycle and this other product that "eliminates the need for water changes".

Idiots!!!!!! (both them and the local chain store)

As I read over this thread, it's ironic how many 'truths' are passed off as myth - even in this thread.

My two favorites so far are "fish don't breath air" and "fish can't break out tank glass".
Both incorrect.
