there should be a zagat rating on fish stores, like they do for restaurants. This way, people know who is retahhhhded about fishkeeping and who you should just get chemicals and the accessories from.

Some fish do "gulp" air at the surface for resporation like anabantoids for example (betta, gourami, etc..) THey have a labrynth organ that absorbs oxygen.

My two favorites so far are "fish don't breath air" and "fish can't break out tank glass".
Both incorrect.

turtall said:My favorite myth is about the Fish God, Hwahk. Hwahk wanted sex with a human and when the virgin Mary was washing clothes in a river he took her right there on the water. After she married her husband Joseph, Joseph could smell Hwahk and wouldn't go there, so even tho the marriage wasn't consecrated she became pregnant with the offspring of Hwahk, who was born in a manger, and whom they named Jesus. It was actually Mary who Hwahk'ed on water.
My point regarding fish breaking tank glass is that though I have HEARD of this phenomenon countless times, I have yet to see it happen or know anyone, including LFS owners, who have personally experienced this. I just dont see how a fish could develop enough intertia to break through a glass wall while suspended in water. The water will inevitably have less density than the glass, so their contact with said glass will then drive them back into the water. That being said, at least one person responding to this thread said it happened to them, so I have to believe. By the way, has anyone here ever seen a UFO or Elvis, or Elvis flying a UFO (near uranus)?Zoodiver said:As I read over this thread, it's ironic how many 'truths' are passed off as myth - even in this thread.

I swear this is the truth. Our Pacu did not break the glass but it broke the seal, the silicone seal joining the glass panes. The front pane seperated from the side pane creating a... fatal leak. we'll never make that mistake again but the glass integrity was unbroken, just the seal. I repaired the tank and it's holding fish just 4' away from this PC.astronatus said:My point regarding fish breaking tank glass is that though I have HEARD of this phenomenon countless times, I have yet to see it happen or know anyone, including LFS owners, who have personally experienced this.
