Fish-Keeping Myths?????????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine was due to a cheap tank and a fish that shoved around golf ball sized and larger hard rocks. The pike cichlid was not that big and without the rock I am sure it would have bounced.

My cousin had two large oscars in a tank that kept fighting and in the process would bang into the glass. After this went on for some time the seals broke and it leaked. He'd just reseal it and a few months later it'd leak again. The oscars were in a tank way too small-37 gallons. That's another story...

What I meant was that the amount of old water changed does not equal the same amount.
Help me here. OK if 25% + 25% = 50% so with a 100 gal tank, 25 gal + 25 gal = 50 gal? or am I missing something? weekly is better, but if I'm thinking right, you get 25 gal 1st week and get 15 to 20 gal of Really old water out after that?

my niece had a glass divider in her tank and it broke, she joked forever that here goldfish used the ceramic boat as battering ram

A 25% water change followed immediately by another 25% water change will still not equal a 50% water change. Although the amount of water taken out is the same, the amount of pollutants is not the same. The second water change is removing some of the clean water that was just put in.

25% of 100 = 75%
25% of 75 = 56.25
50% of 100 = 50

My absolute favorite fish myth of all time: fish don't feel pain (especially on their lips/mouths).

I don't remember where I read this, but a study was done where 1/2 the fish had a mustard or hot pepper mixture spread on their lips, and the other 1/2 had the mixture w/out the spice (i.e. just the base.) The fish with the spicy mix didn't eat for about 2 hours after the experiment, and were constantly scratching their mouths on the glass and substrate of the tank, whereas the fish with the base mixture behaved perfectly normally. I have absolutely no problem with people who fish to eat, but I really don't like the whole 'catch and release' type of fishing for just that reason. Mutilating animals is bad :(

My favorite two are: A predator raised from a small size with small fish will consider them friends and never food. 2: All chain store employees are incompetent, uncaring workers just out for a paycheck.

My pet peeve is the perpetuation of the Fish Myth...

"ICH is always present in a tank/fish."
..................................................................................................................................

Oh yes, the good'ol forementioned "Fish only grow to the size of their environment."
That, when the fish survive long enough is the result of Stunting.

One that I have found very interesting, and I believe to be a myth, along with finding much in the way of controversial debate is the CO2 20ppm OD myth.
