One of my reticulated flying foxes just kicked the bucket while I was change the water...only different thing that happened was I added new sand on top of the old sand.

maybe I didn’t dose enough prime? In my 90g tank I was dosing for 150g of water in the 135g I also dowsed for 150g of water....maybe I should have spears for 200g of water.

he pretty much laid on the floor twitching and then zoomed around the tank only to fall to the floor again doing this sever times. He is currently in the tank floor gills not moving but ever so slightly twitching

Final measurement, 4 inches.

gills ended up bleeding on the paper towel. I can only assume I was correct in not dosing enough prime.

Sorry for your loss!

Why are you dosing Prime for more than the tank volume?

So you dosed for 150 gal for a 135 gal tank...how big was the water change?

I'm leaning towards the new sand being the problem.

Correct, it’s easy to measure every 50gs of water verses the 35g (if that makes sense). The chlorimines average between 2.1 and 2.3 out of the tap where I live, and I believe prime regular dose will be good for 2.0 chlorimines, so I always over dose a little.

you think the sand maybe got in the gills when I was adding it?

edit*water change was approximately 80/85%

Did the water get cloudy when you added the sand? What kind of sand was it?

I like to dose Prime at 5 mL per 10 gal but your dosage should have been adequate.

My water is very similar to Niki's, hard water, pH 8.0, and 2.0 ppm chloramine, and I used 10 ml of Prime per 50 gallons for several years, and numerous species, with no issues.

Niki - how many 5ml capfuls did you use in that 90 gallon?

It was the black fluorite sand for planted tanks. I added 15lbs and rinsed and added it 1lb at a time.

it didn’t cloud up a lot at all as I didn’t just drop it in the tank, I poured it on top of the already in place sand.

I was draining the tank as I was adding the new sand as well, if you think that makes a difference

I used 3 capfuls when I changed out the water in the 90g.

edit* if that’s the case then I should have use between 5-6 capfuls of prime instead of the measly 3 capfuls I used today.
