What type of eel? I would probably say no, any eel big enough to be with convicts would be to large for a 40 and any small enough for a 40 would be killed by the convicts
Have you considered getting rid of the convicts? You could do a lot more if you did

The problem is the convicts are pretty young and my local fish store takes overgrown or older fish as rescue. If I found a place to give them to what should I put in the tank. I would like 1-3 bigger fish for the tank. As big as you can get for a 40 breeder

Are you getting a bigger tank at some point, I think you’re gonna have a hard time adding to a 40 with two convicts.

Right now I’m in high school at home so I can’t until after college per parent rules. After college I have saved for two more tanks. A 75g and a 300g

There’s a lot of options, I think rainbow cichlids would be a better choice for a 40 with tank mates. You could do a rainbow, maybe a blue or gold gourami, maybe a small school of columbian tetras and some bottom fish maybe yo-yo or khuli loach and a peacock eel

Gotcha, I would go with smaller less aggressive fish in the 40, then do some larger more aggressive fish once you have the larger tanks

Here’s a pic of my rainbow cichlids, they get about 3-4” and have good personality but are not nearly as mean as convicts

Actually, I think keyhole cichlids would be a good fit too,
