Fish on a plane?

No airline allows fish in checked baggage. American and Continental were the last and I was denied a pre-approved shipment, on American, because the rules changed in the 3 days from my confirmed reservation to my flight. The clerk at American told me to try Continental. When I did, I was shot down by Continental, too. Had to reschedule my flight to give me time to take the fish to the Post Office main terminal (freight shippers were closed for the day). $923.00 for shipping the fish and a $100 passenger ticket reassignment later, I was ready for my flight and the asylum.

Ah ok. Can you give an estimate on air shipping from LA to Chicago? (Or a site that I can find that info.)

Sorry, I don't work for the freight offices. They're website is in the yellow pages or at (name of airline).com

Estimates are worthless anyway. Rates include dimensional weight along with actual weight.

Do you have any friends that could stay at your house and just have the fish shipped the day you come back? That way you don't have to worry about being on time and if you trust your friend enough they could put it in your tank too.

Is there a good thread on shipping fish in existence already? I like the idea but I'm not too comfortable with it. I'd love to know what everyones experiences have been with the process.
